A global, industry-wide, data exchange platform, Turbulence Aware receives the existing airline data from ground servers, performs quality control, deidentifies data, and provides the data back to airlines via a ground-to-ground system-to-system connection.

Frequently asked questions

IATA Turbulence Aware is a global, industry-wide, data exchange platform, to collect, standardize and share real-time turbulence data generated directly from aircrafts. The IATA Turbulence Aware Platform provides airline pilots dispatchers and flight operations with real-time and detailed turbulence information, enhancing safety, reducing turbulence related injuries, optimizing flight routes, lowering carbon emissions and enhancing passenger comfort.

IATA’s role is to consolidate the existing turbulence data and work towards increasing global data coverage. Airlines own their data and are free to share their own data with other entities. IATA Turbulence Aware is a non-proprietary solution from a data ownership perspective.

Turbulence values are calculated with an EDR (Eddy Dissipation Rate) algorithm using atmospheric and aircraft data. Aircraft are already equipped with EDR capabilities or simply need a customization, there is no hardware involved.

EDR stands for Energy/Eddy Dissipation Rate. EDR is the official ICAO & WMO turbulence intensity metric for measuring the state of the atmosphere around an aircraft in flight. It provides a standardized measure of atmospheric conditions surrounding an aircraft during flight, helping ensure consistent and accurate turbulence reporting across the globe.

Step 1: Calculation. EDR values are produced by software installed on the aircraft.

Step 2: Input. EDR values are automatically downlinked from aircraft to the ground & forwarded to IATA’s Turbulence Aware database.

Step 3: Processing. EDR format and quality are confirmed, and data is anonymized, then EDR reports are stored.

Step 4: Access. EDR data can be pushed in real-time to an airline or pulled from IATA’s Live or Archive data storage.

Step 5: Display. An airline has 3 options to consume the EDR data: through in-house or third party flight planning tools or in-flight weather tools, or through the IATA Turbulence Aware MET Viewer.

Yes. Beside the EDR, the turbulence reports will include the following parameters: altitude, longitude and latitude coordinates, wind speed, wind direction and air temperature.
