The Safety Issue Review Meeting (SIRM) has historically been a forum which is held on a Global Scale, but with the recognition of regional variance in the types of issues, a decision was taken to supplement the global session with more targeted and focused meetings at regional level.  As part of IATA’s Focus Africa initiative, and under the umbrella of the Collaborative Aviation Safety Improvement Program (CASIP) for Africa, on October 13^th, 2023, the first Regional SIRM was held in Nairobi, Africa. Attended and supported by aviation specialist from the continent as well as Operators with a vested interest in the Region. As the inaugural regional session, the agenda was focussed on a broad range of topics allowing freedom to present on industry issues, in particular, the following topics were discussed:

• RVSM and Large Height Deviation (LHD) – the importance of the RMA in monitoring LHD and RVSM approvals.
• Flight Procedure Design Function – The challenges faced by States.
• Cabin Operations – Supporting the SSP through enhanced Cabin Safety training.
• Aeronautical Information – The importance of timely aeronautical information from the OEM perspective.
• Wildlife – Bird trikes – A case study of an airline and how they have risen to the challenge of Bird strikes, through SMS principles.
• Ground Operations – The elevation of Ground Safety through risk management principles.

Enjoy the articles and we will certainly look forward to seeing you at the two SIRMs planned for Africa in 2024 as part of IATA’s Focus Africa initiative. Future regional sessions will take on a slightly different format which will allow much more time to bring operational safety matters, regulatory compliance to the forefront for debate, and to enable space to consider hazard identification and mitigation strategy discussions.
