Safety Leadership Charter, Guiding Principle 8: “Regularly assess and improve organizational Safety Culture”.
There were some events that raised questions about the penetration of safety culture in the footprint of the company. In addition, an employee survey revealed factors that inhibited the development of a safety culture.
Safety culture is the foundation that supports quality, and therefore, it was considered important for ANA to raise the level of its safety culture.
The promotion of a Positive Safety Culture is one of the key themes of ANA’s mid-term safety policy. The company is building a foundation and implementing a continuous improvement process, placing the highest priority on “just culture" and "reporting culture” elements of its Safety Culture.
Based on an understanding of the current situation (employee awareness and behavior survey), "facilitators" and "barriers" to fostering a safety culture are identified and prioritized for implementation.
Through initiatives appropriate to each department and cross-functional support by the Safety Promotion Department, the goal is for each individual at ANA to become more safety-conscious, and to have the habit of thinking and acting in a well-established manner.
In addition to the existing Safety-I approach, ANA will promote the Safety-II approach, which strengthens human coordination.
Based on the results of the next employee survey, ANA will continue to focus on (1) creating an environment, where front-line employees can work safely and vigorously and (2) developing initiatives to foster a culture of safety, such as improving psychological safety.
It is important to foster a safety culture through steady and continuous efforts. In addition to top management's commitment and active promotion of Positive Safety Culture, the company should implement not only company-wide measures, but also measures appropriate for each department and work area.
